Monaco Grand Prix pit-lane controversy upends 2026 F1 championship standings

Pierre Gasly has been reinstated to third place in the Monaco Grand Prix after a successful appeal against a pit-lane speeding penalty, while George Russell was demoted to 13th. The BBC reports [2,3] the controversy centred on a measurement error in the pit lane that led to six drivers being penalised for speeds as little as 0.1km/h over the 60km/h limit.

Pierre Gasly has been reinstated to third place in the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix following Alpine's successful appeal against a pit-lane speeding penalty [2,3]. According to the BBC [2,3], stewards accepted Alpine's argument that Gasly had not exceeded the 60km/h pit-lane speed limit. The decision has resulted in George Russell being demoted to 13th place after the Mercedes driver received a drive-through penalty for failing to serve his initial pit-lane speeding penalty [2,3].
